Instructor or Assistant Professor of Mass Communication – Multimedia Journalism
The Department of Mass Communication at Midwestern State University invites applications for a faculty position in multimedia journalism to begin August 2025. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position. The department offers a variety of courses across the discipline leading to a broad mass communication degree with specialized minors in multimedia journalism, digital media, broadcasting, digital film production and public relations/advertising. We are highly student-oriented, and faculty are expected to be accessible to the students. Our students, faculty and alumni have won major awards at the state, regional and national levels. Our seven-year-old, multimillion dollar facility includes a full studio, newsroom, Mac and PC labs, all of which were just upgraded with new computers and software.
Midwestern State University, located about two hours from the DFW Metroplex, is the only Texas public institution that is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. MSU is small enough to be personal but large enough to offer students considerable opportunities.
Duties: The successful candidate will teach a range of journalism courses and may be assigned to teach other courses in the major as needed. The successful candidate will also serve as an academic adviser; lead students to participate in extracurricular activities such as student media and internships; maintain a record of scholarly activities commensurate with rank; actively recruit; engage in departmental, university and community service; develop relationships with area professionals; be a positive representative of the department both on and off campus; and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: A master’s degree in mass communication or a related field, and substantial professional experience in journalism, is required for the rank of instructor on non-tenure track. A doctorate or terminal degree in mass communication or a related field is required for the rank of assistant professor on tenure track.
Preferred Qualifications: Related teaching experience, especially at the undergraduate level; professional experience in the field of journalism; video, production and student media experience; ability to teach core courses such as Mass Media and Society, Film Appreciation, and Interpersonal Communication; experience in advising student media; experience in academic advising; experience with recruiting.
