The Department of Media and Communication’s undergraduate degree ranks consistently among the top 10 undergraduate majors on campus, while the master’s degree is ranked 10th campuswide in headcount. At the undergraduate level, students can choose a concentration of broadcast journalism, social media, advertising and public relations, or communication.


ASSISTANT PROFESSOR – JOURNALISM

The Department of Media and Communication at Stephen F. Austin State University, a member of The University of Texas System, offers a collaborative and supportive academic environment. The department has an opening for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track assistant professor position in journalism, which includes teaching four courses per semester (reduced to three courses per semester during the first academic year). This position offers a dynamic opportunity to teach and contribute to the development of journalism education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The selected candidate will begin in August 2025 and will need to relocate to Nacogdoches, Texas.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in multimedia journalism, including media writing, convergence reporting, feature writing, media law and ethics, photojournalism, sports journalism, and editing in both face-to-face and online settings. The graduate program is fully online.
  • Maintain an active scholarly research agenda that supports the graduate program and advances the discipline.
  • Collaborate with the faculty advisor for The Pine Log, SFA’s student newspaper.
  • Engage in student mentoring, recruitment, and departmental, college and university committee service.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Doctorate in mass communication or a related discipline required by August 2025 (candidates who have completed all but their dissertation will be hired as nontenure track instructors until degree completion).
  • Professional journalism experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

LECTURER – COMMUNICATION

The Department of Media and Communication at Stephen F. Austin State University, a member of The University of Texas System, has an opening for a for a full-time, nine-month lecturer position in communication. This nontenure track position offers the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses and engage in departmental service within a collaborative academic environment. Salary is commensurate with experience. The selected candidate will begin in August 2025 and will need to relocate to Nacogdoches, Texas.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate communication courses, including SPCH 1315 Public Speaking and SPCH 1318 Interpersonal Communication. Teaching will primarily be face to face.
  • Teach five courses per semester; a reduced teaching load is possible under certain circumstances.
  • Engage in service to the department, college or university, including committee work and promoting courses, majors, minors and certificates.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in communication or a related discipline (doctorate or completion of all but dissertation preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach face-to-face undergraduate courses in public speaking and interpersonal communication.
  • Practical experience sufficient to teach at a university level.
