Duties: The Department of Digital Media and Journalism at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Media and Journalism. The desired areas of specialization include news editing, local news reporting, and journalism history and theory. Position responsibilities would include running the Department’s online news magazine as part of a required course in the journalism major.
The position would include teaching beginning and intermediate reporting courses, a course on editing and publishing, and a course on the historical, legal, and cultural foundations of journalism.
We are particularly interested in filling the line with a candidate from groups traditionally underrepresented on college campuses, especially scholars committed to diversity and inclusion in their scholarship and teaching. We seek a candidate that would complement the department faculty’s strengths as a blend of active media practitioners/filmmakers, journalists, and media scholars. Along with teaching and scholarly research, duties would include advising the department’s student majors and minors and collegial participation in the life of the Department and University.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Ph.D. or ABD candidates having a firm completion date within the year of the appointment. M.F.A. or terminal degree in their field from an accredited institution, and a substantial body of creative/professional work would also be considered.
- Candidates should have teaching experience at the undergraduate level and present evidence or promise of an active program of research and/or creative work.
Preferred:
- A Ph.D. in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication, or a related field
- At least five years of professional journalism experience, including editing responsibilities
