SJMC Associate Professor or Professor
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications, housed in the College of Information and Communication at the University of South Carolina, invites applications for two nine-month tenure-track faculty appointments at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor to begin August 16, 2025. The successful candidates will have a research and publication record commensurate with an appointment at the associate or full professor rank aligned with the our tenure and promotion guidelines, with a focused research agenda and teaching experience in any of the areas of expertise represented in our school, including but not limited to the following:
- Advertising
- Broadcast Journalism
- Journalism
- Mass Communications
- Public Relations
- Sports Media
- Visual Communications

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications currently enrolls more than 2,000 undergraduates and 70 graduate students in journalism, advertising, public relations, visual communications, sports media and mass communications. The SJMC offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and mass communication and a Ph.D. in mass communication. The faculty consists of a collegial group of researchers and educators with a balance of research and professional experience—nationally renowned scholars, photojournalists, creative directors, media planners, broadcast managers, reporters, producers, editors, and graphic designers among others. The school is housed in a world class building with state of the art facilities, including two professional video studios, a photography studio, and computer labs. We extensively use Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop in our classes. As part of our program, every student has a subscription to Adobe Creative Suite.
College of Information and Communications
The College of Information and Communications is home to two nationally recognized schools, the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the School of Information Science. The college provides outstanding teaching, research, and community outreach. As such, it is one of only a few universities to combine its communications and information science programs, two rapidly evolving — and converging — fields united by a shared belief that information accessibility is the cornerstone of self-governance. The College has more than 100 faculty and staff members. New assets available to faculty and students in both schools include The Social Media Insights Lab and the Biometric and User Experience Lab. Both are designed to facilitate the study of issues related to data, media, and their impact on society.

Required Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. in a journalism, mass communication, communication, or related field, plus relevant academic consistent with the Associate Professor rank or at least nine years for full Professor rank).
- Evidence of scholarly activity in journals, university presses, or other publication outlets consistent with School and College-level expectations for the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor.
- Record of teaching effectiveness aligned with the SJMC’s guidelines for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor.
- Evidence of national or international scholarly reputation related to scholar’s areas of expertise.
- Ability to mentor graduate student research.
- Potential or a well-established record in attracting extramural funding related to scholar’s areas of expertise.
