Job Summary/Basic Function
The ACEJMC-accredited School of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position (#143060) in our rapidly-growing Sports Media program at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2025.
The successful candidate will join us in shaping the future of sports media education. The department’s tenure requirements include a record of excellent teaching, peer-reviewed scholarly research and/or creative activity, and service to the university, the profession, and the public. Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development: Develop and shape the sports media undergraduate and graduate curriculum, particularly in sports broadcasting, to meet student interests and industry demands.
- Teaching: Deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in sports media and journalism and instruct students on producing content across multiple platforms covering a variety of sports.
- Leadership: Direct students in hands-on experiences in the field and on location.
Required Education
A terminal degree in journalism, media, communication, or a closely related field is required by the appointment date.
A master’s degree in journalism, media, communication, or a closely related field with four (4) years of full-time, sports media-focused professional work experience will be considered in lieu of a terminal degree. To receive experience credit for full-time, freelance work, applicants must list each project, including the project’s length, on their CVs.
Other Desirables
Special consideration will be given to applicants with the following:
- Experience teaching in higher education, particularly sports media courses.
- Background in sports media, which may include experience in play-by-play, live sports production, sports information, sports reporting, sports analytics, or related fields.
- Proficiency in teaching the basics of photography, video, audio production, social media platforms, and website design and management.
- Established program of peer-reviewed research or creative activity involving sports media.
- Experience in developing and implementing curriculum.
- Involvement with sports media student organizations, clubs, or groups.
