Texas A&M University

Two Journalism Faculty Positions, Open Rank

Department of Communication & Journalism

Position Description

The Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for two open-rank tenure/tenure-track positions to support its growing Journalism Program. We welcome candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), Associate Professor (tenured), or Professor (tenured). These full-time, 9-month academic appointments have an anticipated start date of August 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be expected to publish, seek grant opportunities, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and engage in service activities. Preferred candidates will also build on research strengths in our other divisions, including public and civic engagement and the interplay between culture, media, technology, and society. As a new program, we also welcome senior faculty interested in taking leadership roles in the growth of Journalism at Texas A&M University.

As part of a university-wide initiative to expand journalism research and education, the Department of Communication and Journalism recently launched its Journalism and Media Practices Division and began enrolling majors into new BA and BS Journalism degrees in fall 2023. The Journalism & Media Practices division is being developed alongside two other divisions: Communication & Media Science and the Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies. Together, these three divisions foster a multidisciplinary approach to addressing critical societal issues through scholarship and teaching.

Through these two new journalism positions, we seek to recruit journalism scholars with demonstrated records of peer-reviewed research and excellence in teaching who can contribute to advancing the study of contemporary journalism. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research engages with current and emerging topics such as digital journalism, data journalism, media ethics, misinformation, the role of artificial intelligence in news production, the impact of social media on journalism, and the challenges of reporting in diverse and polarized environments.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic, welcoming and supportive department committed to shaping the future of journalism and contributing to the public good through innovative research and teaching. Our Journalism division seeks both scholarly excellence and outstanding professional preparation of students through mentoring, industry partnerships, and high-impact learning practices.
