This endowed position was created in 2016 to bridge academy and industry in support of journalism innovation. It is named for James B. Steele, a longtime investigative journalist and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, whose work included the 1991 Philadelphia Inquirer series, “America: What Went Wrong?” documenting the dismantling of the American middle class through pioneering data analysis.

This position is designed for a nationally recognized journalist with a history of leadership and innovation. Applicants must demonstrate experience in teaching, whether at the university level or in other settings. Applicants should outline a research or project agenda that advances journalism’s societal role and supports its sustainability, preferably among the communities Temple serves. Additionally, applicants should bring one or more specialties to the department among the following areas of innovation:

The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least two courses per semester in their areas of expertise and use the remainder of their time conducting research, advancing projects, and otherwise leading thought and practice in journalism and journalism education. Job Summary:

As part of a group hire supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the College of Letters and Science at UW-Madison, The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Department of Political Science and the Department of Psychology seek two full-time Assistant Professors beginning August 18, 2025, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching and an emphasis on communication, social identity and civil society. Each successful candidate’s tenure home will be in one of the three participating departments, or some combination of the three, in consultation with the candidates. As such, the selected candidate will teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in one of three, or some combination of the three, departments/schools: the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Department of Political Science and/or the Department of Psychology. The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Letters & Science, that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and (undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

We seek to strengthen our cutting-edge research, teaching, and practice concerning issues of communication, social identity, and civil society. We are particularly interested in scholars studying one or more of the following issues: 1) communication ecologies, social structure, and civic life; 2) political discourse, contentious politics, and democratic health; and 3) social identity, social and racial injustice, and conflicts over political power and social respect. The successful candidate will join a community of productive scholars who value a wide variety of conceptual, methodological, and analytical perspectives including, but not limited to: quantitative observation, qualitative fieldwork, content analysis, survey analysis, experimental research, computational analysis, archival research, field interventions, translational and implementation work, and emerging artificial intelligence techniques.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college’s commitment to equity among all aspects of their teaching, mentoring, research, and service. In addition to developing and maintaining a robust research portfolio in the area(s) of communication, social identity, and civil society, the successful applicant will mentor highly motivated master’s and doctoral students in this area of high demand and societal impact. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in the research mission of the Center for Communication and Civic Renewal at UW-Madison. The standard teaching load is four courses per academic year, typically including one graduate seminar per year. University and professional service is required appropriate to career stage.

The Department of Advertising and Public Relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor in public relations. The faculty start date for this position will be August 1, 2025.

Position Description:

The ideal candidate must have a strong record of teaching and research in public relations with expertise in corporate communications, corporate social advocacy, communication leadership, corporate reputation and/or other related areas. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of required courses across our curriculum that include but are not limited to public relations management, PR ethics and leadership, PR campaigns and introduction to corporate communications. The successful candidate will also contribute to our growing curriculum by developing and teaching new courses in corporate communications and related topics.

The successful candidate will have an active research agenda to build a track record of a committed research focus on corporate communications via scholarly publications and funded research in the areas noted above. The successful candidate will have a thorough grounding in theory, research, and practice as well as the ability and commitment to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in mass communication, public relations, communication, business, or a closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered.
  • Subject matter expertise in corporate communications and/or related areas.
  • Record of teaching effectiveness in courses related to public relations and/or other communication-related areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An active research agenda and a proven strong research record/potential in public relations that includes publication of peer-reviewed articles in leading scholarly journals in public relations, communication, mass communication, business communication, media, journalism, and/or related fields.
  • Subject matter expertise in corporate communications alongside expertise in other related areas, including but not limited to corporate social advocacy, communication leadership, corporate social responsibility, business literacy, the critical role of corporate communications and how it supports an organization’s business strategy, and the dynamic relationship between corporate communications and the ever-changing technologies (e.g., generative AI, immersive media and/or digital platforms, and data analytics).
  • Demonstrated potential for online instruction.
  • Experience in grant writing, and/or interest in and the potential to seek external funding via interdisciplinary collaboration
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of industry experience in corporate communications and/or related practice.
