The Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University, The Jesuit University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in Science Communication, to commence September 1, 2025. About the Position

Applicants are sought in the area of science communication and culture, with a robust research agenda and teaching experience that aligns with this focus. Areas of specialization might include (but are not limited to): public understandings of science; science journalism; science and/or science-related public policy; science misinformation/disinformation; media effects related to science, health, environment, or related areas; scientific rhetoric; environmental justice; science technologies; global/international initiatives in science, health, safety, environment, or related areas; science data collection and security; disaster and risk communication; ecology and sustainability; critical communication in science, health, environment, or related areas. We are interested in applications from across the spectrum of science communication. Candidates can employ any number of methodological and theoretical approaches, but should demonstrate pedagogical expertise in designing and teaching novel courses on science communication topics. Scholars focused on public/community engagement, historically marginalized and underserved communities, as well as those who take an interdisciplinary approach to understandings of culture and science are especially encouraged to apply.

INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a one-year, annually renewable non-tenure track faculty position in the Department of Communication at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence. The position will be based on our Stamford campus and will begin on January 1, 2025, or August 23, 2025 (negotiable). This hire is part of a strategic initiative to offer the Communication major in its entirety on the Stamford campus, capitalizing on the academic and professional opportunities posed by its proximity to New York City. The Stamford major was launched in 2022 and now enrolls over 100 students. On the whole, the Department of Communication has 19 tenure-stream faculty members and 5 Assistant Professors-in-Residence across two campuses and has approximately 35 graduate students and 1000 undergraduate majors. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level and be capable of teaching a broad range of courses in the department including those in marketing, advertising, and public relations, as well as those in their area of specialization. The teaching load will be seven courses across the academic year – three courses for one semester and four courses for the other semester. The ability and desire to supervise our newly chartered chapter of PRSSA is highly desired. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Job Summary: The Department of Journalism in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track open-rank professor of environmental journalism. The successful candidate will also be appointed as the Faculty Director of the college’s Center for Environmental Journalism (CEJ).

Established in 1992, and one of the world’s preeminent centers of its kind, the CEJ’s goal is to enrich public understanding of environmental issues by elevating the quality, range, and depth of coverage by journalists. The CEJ does this by helping seasoned and emerging journalists enhance their knowledge of the scientific, economic, political, and social aspects of these issues. The CEJ includes oversight of the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism and the Water Desk.

The successful candidate will be a full-time tenured member of the Department of Journalism and expected to contribute commeasurably to the department, college and university. Roughly 20% of the successful candidate’s appointment will be dedicated to service as the Director of the CEJ. The responsibilities of this position include the supervision of a staff of three people (the CEJ’s Program Manager, and two Water Desk co-directors), and oversight of the CEJ-directed work of the Assistant Director of the CEJ; budget and fund-raising for existing and new programs and initiatives; the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism; The Water Desk. As part of these responsibilities, the Director oversees the organization of symposia and seminars; planning weekly seminars and regular field trips for the Scripps program; selection, on-boarding and support of Scripps Fellows; planning and administration of all aspects of The Water Desk; planning and administration of new and existing CEJ initiatives, programs and projects.

The successful candidate will identify within the broad field of journalism but specialize in an area that could fit under a very broad definition of environmental or science journalism. We will consider both academics and professionals for this job. If the successful candidate researches environmental journalism, the department strongly prefers someone well-grounded in journalism studies and open to creative interchange with colleagues practicing a variety of qualitative, quantitative and practice-based methodologies while researching and teaching journalism and media through both a social science and humanistic approach. All candidates should also have demonstrated commitment to and experience with inclusive pedagogies and the mentoring of a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate students.

In addition to the service commitments above, the position is responsible for teaching 2 courses each academic year, usually assigned as 1 course per semester, and is expected to commit 40% of their effort to maintaining a strong national and/or international scholarly/creative work profile within their discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An MA in journalism or a closely allied field is required at the time of appointment.
  • At least one year teaching at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in journalism or a closely allied field is preferred.
  • An already tenured candidate is strongly preferred. We will, though, consider candidates whose body of scholarly/creative work, teaching experience, and record of service make a clear case that they would receive an award of tenure from the University of Colorado through the University’s requisite hire with tenure processes.   • Three or more years teaching at the undergraduate level is preferred.
  • Experience teaching at the graduate level is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:

The candidate should have a Ph.D. in a field related to media and communication, or in a field related to social sciences with a focus on media and communication by August 2025.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Communication Department at Berry College is seeking an Assistant Professor or Professor of Practice of Digital Media and Content Creation. We seek a faculty member who is committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring students, with expertise in journalism, storytelling, and content creation. The journalism skillset taught by this position is at the core of the department’s goal of graduating communicators who can develop meaningful content across a range of media.

Berry’s Communication program comprises four concentrations: Digital and Social Media, Filmmaking and Cinematic Arts, Public Relations, and Communication and Media Studies. We are a vibrant, collegial department focused on preparing students for the media industry and graduate studies. Our students create content inside and outside the classroom, working with five student-run media organizations producing short films, photo essays, digital content, and more. Berry student media regularly win national awards for their excellence, with some of that content coming directly from the classroom.

Primary teaching responsibilities include Content Development and Content Creation, two foundational skills courses required of all of our majors, and Social Media Management and Strategy. The ability to teach courses in our filmmaking concentration, such as documentary filmmaking or scriptwriting, is desirable.
