Selected Assessment Websites

http://www.ku.edu/~acejmc/BREAKING/Assessment_Guide.pdf -- Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. A Guide to Assessment of Student Learning in Journalism and Mass Communication. Lawrence, KS: ACEJMC, 2001. The Council’s handbook outlining assessment requirements and definitions of indirect and direct measures of student learning and outcomes.

http://www.airweb.org/images/measurequality.pdf -- American Council on Education, Measuring Quality: Choosing Among Surveys and Other Assessments of College Quality, Washington, DC: ACE, 2001. Describes and compares nationally-standardized assessment instruments.

http://library.humboldt.edu/ic/journalism/journalism_info_competece.html -- Humboldt State University Library. "Information Competencies for the Journalism Professional," Arcata, CA: Humboldt State University, 2002. A list of 10 competencies (not to be confused with the 11 articulated by ACEJMC) and links to sites with information to help in the development of those competencies. Specific to print and broadcast journalism; some of the general links could also be useful for strategic communications.

Selected Assessment Books

Angelo, Thomas A. and K. Patricia Cross, Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers. 2d ed. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 1993. The widely-recognized "bible" of assessment for college and university instruction. Specifically addresses classroom assessment (rather than programmatic assessment), but is particularly useful for the many examples of techniques that individual instructors might employ. Could help faculty overcome resistance to assessment requirements.

Banta, Trudy W., Jon P. Lund, Karen E. Black and Frances W. Oblander, Assessment in Practice: Putting Principles to Work on College Campuses. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 1996. Provides examples of specific types of assessment methods (e.g., portfolio reviews, exit interviews, capstone course assessment, etc.).

Christ, William G., ed., Media Education Assessment Handbook, Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1997. Written before the new ACEJMC standards were articulated, but still one of the very few JMC-specific assessment resources available anywhere. Part I includes five chapters on Programmatic Assessment and Part II reviews Knowledge, Skills and Attitude Assessment in a variety of JMC subject areas or skills specializations. Very useful handbook.

Palomba, Catherine A. and Trudy W. Banta, eds., Assessing Student Competence in Accredited Disciplines: Pioneering Approaches to Assessment in Higher Education. Herndon, VA: Stylus Publishing, LLC, 2001. Does not include JMC, but provides examples from many other accredited disciplines (nursing, engineering, social work, etc.).

Walvoord, Barbara E. and Virginia Johnson Anderson, Effective Grading:A Tool for Learning and Assessment. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 1998. How to use course grading with embedded assessment.
