AEJMC Divisional Journal Guidelines

These guidelines should be used in developing a journal contract between a division/interest group and a publisher. It is not the intent of the Board of Directors to interfere or dictate editorial decision-making with regard to division journals. However, it is the role of the Board to protect the association. The following guidelines are to help divisions/interest groups enter into a mutually beneficial contract with a publisher. It is recommended that these items be explicit within the contract. That contract then must come to the Board for approval.

  1. length of contract
  2. clearly describe the content/editorial scope of the journal
  3. control of editorial content
    a. identifying who has editorial control
    b. identifying who selects the editor
    c. outlining how many seats, if any, the division/group would have on the editorial board
  4. online rights
    a. if the journal is accessible online, who maintains rights to works published?
  5. frequency of contract review
  6. subscription rate
    a. how is this negotiated?
    b. what’s the length of the term?
    c. how are rates changed?
  7. contract termination
    a. who can terminate the contract between the division and the publisher?
    b. when and how can this happen?
    c. what happens if the publisher is sold or is out of business?
  8. profit-sharing specifications
  9. division/interest group liaison with publisher
    a. who is the liaison between the division and the publisher?
    b. should the editor be a divisional member or officer?
  10. specifications as to who will own and pay for copyrights.

If these items are not addressed in the contract, the Board may ask for contract revisions. The AEJMC Board of Directors reserves the right to have an attorney review the contract before signing it.

(Approved by the Board of Directors, Dec. 3, 2006)
