Interest Groups
Civic and Citizen Journalism Interest Group
The Civic and Citizen Journalism Interest Group invites research paper submissions for the 2008 convention. Suggested paper topics include: citizen media, blogging, civic mapping, community conversations, newsroom projects, legal and ethical issues in civic or citizen journalism, using polls, focus groups and other methods in civic reporting, civic and citizen journalism in a multicultural environment, civic and citizen journalism and new technologies, history/philosophy of civic journalism, the changing newspaper industry economy and its effect on the development of the citizen journalism movement, the missions and meanings of “civic journalism” and “citizen journalism,” and teaching civic and citizen journalism.
Please direct any questions to Research Co-Chairs Sue Ellen Christian (sueellen.christian@wmich.edu) or Burton St. John (bsaintjo@idu.edu).
Community Journalism Interest Group
The Community Journalism Interest Group (COMJIG) is interested in research focused on any and all aspects of community journalism, from small-town newspapers to ethnic papers and niche magazines in major cities, from rural independent radio to independent Web ’zines with readers around the world.
Our goal is to identify and present original, meaningful research that advances the understanding of the role of journalists and news organizations as members of communities, with particular interest in issues that are unique to small-market (which does not necessarily mean small-town) journalism. Quantitative and qualitative methods are equally welcomed, as are attempts at mixed methodology. Theoretical groundings are appreciated. Only serious and complete research-based studies will be considered — please do not submit opinion essays, incomplete pilot studies, literature reviews, or other incomplete or unscholarly works.
Papers should be a maximum of 7,500 words long (about 25 pages, double-spaced) and should include an abstract no longer than 75 words. Please provide a running title on each page. Manuscripts must be prepared for blind review, with any language that identifies the authors or the authors’ institutions removed. (Biographical and contact information for authors will be associated with the paper through the electronic submittal process all research competitions will be using this year.)
For more information, contact COMJIG research chair Andris Straumanis via e-mail (andris.straumanis@uwrf.edu) or telephone, (715) 425-3169.
Entertainment Studies Interest Group
The Entertainment Studies Interest Group invites faculty and graduate students to electronically submit papers that deal with any aspect of mediated entertainment, including (but not limited to) narrative film, experimental cinema, fictional books, fictional television, game shows, new media, popular magazines, sports, and tabloid/celebrity journalism may be submitted. All methods (qualitative, quantitative, historical, critical) of inquiry are encouraged. Papers may not exceed 25 pages, excluding tables, figures, and references.
Although all papers compete on an equal footing, the top-ranked student paper(s) sent to ESIG will receive special recognition and first author(s) will be awarded free conference registration. Students who wish to be eligible for this award must indicate when submitting electronically that the paper was written exclusively by one or more students. Only students are eligible for this prize; papers with any faculty co-author(s) are not. The top-ranked faculty paper will be recognized. Authors are not required to be a member of ESIG to submit a paper. The same author(s) can submit more than one paper to ESIG.
Specific Guidelines: Papers may not exceed 25 pages, excluding tables, figures, and references. APA or MLA are acceptable styles for references. Questions about submissions should be directed to Danny Shipka, Louisiana State University, 225-578-8451 or dshipka@lsu.edu.
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Interest Group
The GLBT Interest Group invites paper submissions that deal with any aspect of the intersection between media and sexual minorities. Research is welcome from a wide variety of approaches, and those using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Given the historic nature of this year’s convention, we especially invite those who may have done work on the history of media coverage of sexual minorities and how that has changed over time.
If you have questions about submissions, contact GLBT research chair Tim Edwards, at txedwards@ualr.edu.
Graduate Education Interest Group
The Graduate Education Interest Group (GEIG) invites graduate students to submit research papers that address any aspect of journalism or mass communication are welcomed, as are all research methods. Authors are not required to be a member of GEIG to submit a paper, but papers with a faculty co-author are not eligible.
All entries should follow the guidelines of the AEJMC uniform paper competition, which is published in the AEJMC newsletter and on the Association’s Web site at www.aejmc.org. Please visit this Web site for information regarding the online submission process as well as the uploading procedure for papers. It is important to reiterate that all uploaded papers must be void of any identifying information, or else they will be disqualified. All submissions will undergo a blind review process by a panel of independent readers. Authors will be notified whether their papers have been accepted and will receive a copy of the reviewers’ comments. Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been previously published or presented elsewhere and are not under consideration by any scholarly journal or trade organization.
The top-ranked student submission will receive the annual Guido Stempel award and will receive an award check and a plaque; the top three papers will receive conference registration reimbursement. Authors of the three top papers will have the opportunity to present at a special GEIG-sponsored research panel during the conference.
For more information, please contact Jennette Lovejoy (jl141705@ohio.edu) or Mara Hobler (mhobler@umd.edu).
Special Call: Research Addressing the State of Graduate Education in Journalism & Mass Communication
As part of the larger self-evaluation process being undertaken by AEJMC in recognition of its 100th anniversary, GEIG is holding an additional special call for scholarly work addressing the state of graduate education in journalism and mass communication. This research will be presented at a separate panel during the convention and may focus on present-day graduate education or examine the discipline from an historical perspective. Due to the unique nature of this call, papers may be authored or co-authored by graduate students, faculty, and/or outside professionals and may be submitted in a number of styles, including essays, commentaries, and first-person accounts. In addition, research that has been previously presented, but not published, may be considered. Please contact GEIG head Dan Reimold (dr716305@ohio.edu) with any questions related to this one-time-only call.
Internships and Careers Interest Group
The Internships and Careers Interest Group (ICIG) is soliciting entries of research papers concerning media careers and internships. ICIG welcomes research from many perspectives, disciplines, theoretical or methodological approaches. Past paper presentations typically report applied research and have addressed such topics as: the use of internship supervisor evaluations for program assessment, the attributes for career success in media industries, how undergraduates process persuasive messages about internships, how a new advertising department launched a professional internship program, the glass ceiling for women in sports information jobs. Papers are especially welcomed from faculty whom have made the transition from the newsroom, agency, non-profit or corporate arena to academia. Student and faculty papers will be judged together.
Top Paper Award: A top paper will be chosen and the author(s) will receive a certificate and a small cash award. Format: Page limit for papers is 25 pages (12-point font, doubled spaced). The page limit does NOT include the title page, abstract, or bibliography, but it DOES include charts and graphs. Margins should be 1-inch on all sides. Pages should be numbered. Refer to the general call for information about online submission. Please note that papers not downloaded by the deadline will not be considered. Questions: If you have any questions contact Cathy Rogers at crogers@loyno.edu or at 504.865.3297.
Religion and Media Interest Group
The Religion and Media Interest Group invites submission of research on any topic related to religion and media. RMIG is interested in papers using any recognized research method and any recognized citation style. Please note that RMIG is interested in research presentations, rather than essays, commentary, or simple literature reviews. Possible areas of focus for the research include but are not limited to studies of religious group members and uses of secular media, exploration of media coverage of religious issues and groups, studies of the audiences for religious news, media strategies of religious organizations, religious advertising, religious and spiritual content in popular culture, and so on. The competition is open to both faculty and students - their work is judged together. For more about RMIG and its mission, see http://www.rnasecure.org/aejmc/aejmc.html.
Papers will be considered for presentation in traditional or high-density research panels or research poster sessions. Please note the maximum length of 25 pages, excluding endnotes and tables. Presentation: The top-ranking papers will be presented at the AEJMC 2008 convention, August 6-9 in Chicago, Ill. At least one author of a selected paper must register and attend.
The Religion and Media Interest Group sponsors a Top Paper competition for student papers. The top graduate student paper will be selected from among the refereed papers submitted to the RMIG competition, and the student paper winner will receive $100 and a certificate. In the case of multi-authored papers, all authors must be students to qualify for the Top Student Paper award. The top student paper award will not be given if the selected paper is not presented at the convention. In order to be considered for the Top Student Paper award, the cover page of the paper must indicate that it is a student submission. RMIG will judge graduate student papers equally with faculty papers in terms of consideration for acceptance; the only difference is the top paper award. Scholars should consult the general call for papers published by AEJMC. All entries must conform to the AEJMC Electronic Call for Papers, and will be removed from consideration if they do not adhere to the uniform call for papers. Please read the instructions carefully.
For questions, contact the RMIG Research Chair: Paola Banchero, at 907-223-5102 or paola@uaa.alaska.edu. Type “RMIG Research Paper” in the subject line if communicating via e-mail.
Science Communication Interest Group
The Science Communication Interest Group invites you to submit original research on all aspects of science communication, including issues in health communication, environmental communication and other related areas. All original, non-published papers will be considered. Abstracts of past accepted papers are available online at http://www.aejmc.org/_events/convention/abstracts/. The group welcomes submissions from all theoretical and methodological perspectives. We strongly encourage submissions by students.
Authors of the top-scoring student paper and top-scoring faculty paper will be recognized in a special panel session. Papers by student authors are judged on equal footing with faculty papers. Students competing for top student paper and the accompanying $1,000 Eason prize will be judged together with other SCI Group submissions. The Eason prize is awarded in memory of former University of Texas doctoral candidate Lori Eason (1957-2002). Papers competing for the Eason prize cannot be co-authored with faculty and authors must identify their submission as an Eason prize entry.
PAPER REQUIREMENTS: Maximum paper length is 30 double-spaced pages with 12-point font and one inch margins. Please comply with all other requirements in the AEJMC Uniform Paper Call.
For more info, contact the SCI Group research chair: LeeAnn Kahlor, kahlor@mail.utexas.edu; (512) 471-8498.
Small Programs Interest Group
This standard research paper call supplements a Special Paper Call to be released by the Small Programs Interest Group in December. The special call will invite all fulltime faculty who are members of SPIG to submit professional journalistic or PR projects —what we call “Creative Scholarship of Application”— in either print writing or in electronic media if such projects are related to a member’s teaching areas.
The following SPIG traditional paper call particularly encourages research that focuses on the relationship between teaching and research. We invite members of all divisions and interest groups to contribute research papers – using any methodology, whether quantitative or qualitative—that focus on research about teaching, especially including how teaching about changing media, including convergence, can be accomplished without major financial resources.
Guidelines: SPIG requests a paper length of NO MORE than 25 pages (excluding references) and the document must be double-spaced and typed in 11-point Arial font or Times Roman font – and follow APA style guidelines; Authors also must heed the AEJMC general paper call regulations. Papers submitted to the wrong division or that do not meet ALL the above guidelines will not be reviewed (for example, submission of an abstract by the deadline but a paper AFTER the deadline, will result in the paper NOT being accepted). However, SPIG research co-chairs will make every effort to contact authors who do not meet guidelines so that they will be aware as early as possible that their paper has not been accepted and the reasons why.
For more information, contact the SPIG Research Co-Chairs: Carol Dykers (dykers@salem.edu or cell: 919.548.5583) or Pam Parry (parryp@mail.belmont.edu).
Commissions
Commission on the Status of Women
The Commission on the Status of Women invites submissions of research for competitive paper sessions that are based on issues of gender and communication. We welcome papers in which gender is a main focus, that use a variety of approaches and research methods, including but not limited to critical, empirical, ethnographic, historical, legal and semiotic. It is expected that the research will demonstrate a familiarity with feminist communication theory where appropriate. Examples of relevant topics include: representations of women in the news; the role of gender in newsrooms or classrooms; effects of mass media on women and girls; feminist approaches to teaching and communication; women’s use of/production of media; gender equality in the profession or the academy; etc. Suggested paper length is 25 pages (double-spaced, 12-point type), excluding tables, references, figures or illustrations. Authors of accepted papers must be able to present their papers at the conference. Papers are submitted either to the open paper competition (faculty and student-faculty) or the student competition (strictly student-authored papers) and should be clearly labeled as such. We especially encourage submissions by students; the winner of the top student paper will be awarded $100 and the winner of the second student paper will receive $50. Authors of the top papers will be recognized in the convention program and at the CSW business meeting at the convention. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Rauch, CSW Research Chair, at jennifer.rauch@liu.edu. This paper call is part of the overall AEJMC call for research papers; all submissions must adhere to the general guidelines put forth by AEJMC.
